You probably think that flossing every day is essential to good oral health. Those of us at Jefferson City Dental Care agree. We also think that trying out different types of floss helps to establish or solidify the habit, and get you the flossing comfort you desire.
Let’s review some of the most common types of dental floss.
Basic floss is either a monofilament floss, which is typically made of some kind of rubber or plastic, or multifilament, which is made of nylon or silk. Nylon floss is less pricey, more common, and is sold waxed or unwaxed.
Monofilament floss will not rip or tear, and because of this, many people find that it pulls in between the teeth easier. This type of floss is commonly referred to as “glide” floss.
Both monofilament floss and multifilament floss are sold in various thicknesses and widths. It is useful to find the size that works best for you. You should not have to force it between your teeth. A floss that slips gently between the teeth is best.
Dental tape is nylon floss in the form of a wide, flat ribbon. Many of our patients find that dental tape is the easiest floss to get between their teeth.
If your wear braces or some other appliance, you’ll be glad to know there are flosses designed to be used with these devices. Make sure to meet with your orthodontist about flossing. You don’t want to break this good habit just because you’re having your teeth corrected!
For guidance about flossing, ask one of our Jefferson City Dental Care hygienists. They can answer any questions you have about flossing, brushing, and general oral health. They can also provide information about cosmetic dentistry procedures, like teeth whitening.
